Police officers and members of the RIU had to intervene and quell a violent quarrel involving over 30 people.
The fight erupted outside the Bormla Police Station, on Piazza Gavino Gulia.
Witnesses said the fight took off minutes after what seemed to be a family argument between a few people.
According to police sources, the two parties involved in the quarrel were described as the Dalli family of Bormla and the Brincat family of Senglea, members of whom on the previous day had played each other in a football match.
An argument that started on the field on Monday continued on Tuesday morning when a member of the Dalli family sought out his rival in Isla, and assaulted him. The victim subsequently proceeded to the Bormla police station to file a police report. Within minutes, members of the two families arrived on the scene, and a full-on fight ensued.
District police were outnumbered and unable to bring the situation under control, prompting a call for the Rapid Intervention Unit to intervene. At least five units from the RIU responded.
“At one point everything got out of control. I don’t know if there are any people injured,” a source at the scene told MaltaToday.
Police arrested six men, while another three men were hospitalised. It was said that two unidentified aggressors were brandishing metal pipes in the assault.
