Briton admits to trashing hotel room during drunken rampage

36-year-old tourist handed eight-month suspended jail term after admitting to causing €770 in damage.

A British man with a drinking problem was today handed a suspended jail term after admitting to trashing a hotel room during a drunken rampage on Thursday evening.

Joey Bond, 36, of London, who is Malta on holiday, pleaded guilty to causing €770 in damage to a hotel room at the Soreda Hotel, in St Paul’s Bay, at 9:45pm.

Standing in the court barefoot and wearing a bright pink shirt and yellow shorts, Bond admitted that he had a drinking a problem, and that he is ready to shoulder responsibility.

After the sitting was suspended for a few minutes, Bond admitted to the charges and promised to pay for the damages by 17 December, the day he is expected to depart Malta.

Moreover Bond, who during the sitting was heard talking to himself and insisting that he does not want to go to prison, said he accepts responsibility for his actions.

In submissions for punishment, the prosecution and the defence underlined that the Briton cooperated with the police, and said that a suspended sentence would suffice.

Taking this into account, Magistrate Miriam Hayman read out the judgement and jailed the man for eight months, suspended for 18 months.
