Police say sinking car report was false alarm

The police said that a report on a car falling into the sea by the Valletta breakwater was actually a false alarm.

The police said that a report they had received yesterday about a car falling into the sea by the Valletta breakwater near Fort St. Elmo was actually a false alarm.

Yesterday, at around 12:45pm, two people informed the police that they had seen a grey car, with two people inside it, heading towards the breakwater steps. The two observers moved closer to try and identify the vehicle but could find no sign of it and feared that it had been dragged into the sea.

Due to strong waves, the Malta Armed Forces were unable to search the sea for evidence of the sunken car.

However, yesterday evening a man informed the police that he had been in a grey car with another person next to the breakwater but that they had driven off as soon as they could see how rough the sea was.

Further police investigations revealed that no car had fallen into the sea and the police therefore called off their investigations.
