Prisoners’ hunger strike against move to Division 6

Seven residents moved to maximum security division at the prisons went on hunger strike

Prompted by parliamentary questions, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela confirmed that seven prisoners had gone on hunger strike on 12 March.

In reply to a question raised by shadow home affairs minister Beppe Fenech Adami, Abela confirmed that the seven had protested against their stay at Divison 6, an area of maximum security at the Corradino Correctional Facility.

The prisoners had been moved to the area after testing positive to a urine drug test.

Two of the residents ended their strike on 14 March while the rest followed soon afterwards.

The minister said a medical team monitored the prisoners during their hunger strike.
