Curfew breaker jailed after approaching police for lift home

A man who approached the police in Paceville in the hope of getting a lift home, got more than he bargained for after a court jailed him for breaching bail conditions.
31 year-old Jeffrey Cassar from Mosta, was in Paceville two hours after his curfew on Saturday night when he made the ill-advised choice of approaching the police and asking them for a lift home “because he should be at home right now” due to his bail conditions.
Cassar had been ordered to observe a midnight curfew as one of his bail conditions on one of several fraud cases he is facing.
Instead of a lift home, the man was arrested and spent the night in a cell.
Magistrate Doreen Clarke heard Cassar explain that he had lost track of time when he had gone out with his friends that night.
He pleaded guilty to breaching one of his bail conditions and was jailed for six months.
Cassar is undergoing criminal proceedings for seven counts of fraud, having used stolen cheques. He was arrested in September 2013 but escaped from police. He was subsequently apprehended in Mellieha.
Cassar is denying charges of defrauding a lotto booth owner of more than €5,000, together with a cycle shop in Mosta, a photography shop in Valletta and a poultry shop in Burmarrad. He also stands charged with defrauding one man out of over €6,700.
Inspector Josric Mifsud prosecuted.
Lawyer Noel Bianco appeared for the accused.
