Couple hit by shrapnel from fireworks

A 62-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman suffered grievous injuries when they were hit by wooden splinters at a farmhouse near Wied iz-Zurrieq.

The incident happened at around 10pm.

According to preliminary investigations, it resulted that the couple, from Kalkara, where among a number of other people who decided to leave the farmhouse as soon as fireworks were being let-off from a nearby field.

However, on their way out, a petard hit pieces of wood which sent splinters flying, hitting the couple.

Police investigation underway.
