Chauffeur was driving towards airport to pick up Opposition leader on his return from Brussels • Car is ‘not the first’ to be hit by stones in Marsa
As the President of the Republic, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Labour Party condemned an attack involving the official car of the leader of the Opposition, Marsa mayor Francis Debono said this was not an isolated incident.
“It is not the first time that drivers passing under bridges in Marsa reported their cars being hit by stones,” Debono said.
Since the incidents are sporadic, the mayor has suggested the installation of cameras close to the bridges to serve as deterrents. “It doesn’t make sense to have police officers standing guard by the bridges,” he added.
One of Simon Busuttil’s two chauffeurs was driving through Marsa last night, when a stone “was thrown” at the car’s windscreen, the Nationalist Party said in a statement.
The car was being driven through December 13 Road towards the airport to pick up Busuttil on his return from Brussels, where he attended the European People’s Party.
The matter was reported to the airport police. Nobody was injured in the incident.
Busuttil was not in the car, which is a replacement car, at the time of the incident. The car he has been using for the past two years and a half has been seized by the police due to the ongoing magisterial inquiry.
