Senegalese fugitive turns himself in after two years

A Senegalese man who spent two years on the run after escaping from the Hal Safi detention centre has been sent to prison this morning, after voluntarily giving himself up to the police.
26-year-old Kausu Kanin had gone on the run from the detention centre during the night of 28 January 2014 and remained a fugitive until he turned himself in to police yesterday.
Before Magistrate Gabriella Vella this morning, Inspector Victor Aquilina charged Kanin with escaping from a place of custody. The accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
Lawyer Benjamin Valenzia was legal aid to the accused.
