Briton dies after falling ill during Malta Marathon
55-year-old man dies at Mater Dei Hospital, shortly after he fell ill during Malta marathon
A 55-year-old Briton who was taking part in the Malta marathon died today, shortly after he fell ill while running in Sliema.
The police said the man, who was in Malta on holiday, felt sick at around 11:30am, just one kilometre away from the finish line.
An ambulance was called in but he died shortly after arriving at Mater Dei Hospital.
The cause of his death is not yet known.
An autopsy will be held tomorrow while an inquiry is being held.
TVM reported that the Briton was accompanied by his wife during the marathon, and that a doctor had given him the all clear to participate in the marathon after he had complained of chest pain two weeks ago.
