Lithuanian man seriously injured injured in four-storey fall after lifeboat suspended on side of vessel falls into the sea

A 56-year-old Lithuanian man was injured after he fell from a height of about four storeys, police said.

The incident occurred at around 9:15 am when the man was carrying out maintenance work on a lifeboat which was suspended on the side of a vessel.

Preliminary investigations suggest that for reasons yet-to-be established, the enclosed lifeboat, which sources said was located at the aft of the moored vessel, detached from the suspension block and fell into the sea while the man was on it.

The man was brought to shore at the Wied il-Bini quay and was taken to Mater Dei Hospital by an ambulance.

The man is said to have suffered injuries to his head.

He was later certified to be suffering from grievous injuries, police said.

Police investigations are ongoing.
