Fgura necklace-snatcher jailed

A necklace-snatching thief has been jailed for 16 months this morning, after filing an admission, while his brother and co-accused continues to protest his innocence.

35-year-old Kevin Borg from Qawra pleaded guilty to aggravated theft, tampering with a vehicle registration certificate and license disc and relapsing, in connection with the daylight mugging of a woman in St. Thomas Street Fgura, earlier this month.

His brother Anthony, 40, who lives in Cospicua, continues to deny charges of complicity in the crime, breaching the conditions of a suspended sentence and carrying tools used for burglary without good reason. Anthony Borg is claiming to have simply been driving his brother around. Both men were also accused of holding the woman against her will and handling stolen property.

Kevin Borg apologised to the Canadian-born victim, who was present in Magistrate Joe Mifsud’s court-room this morning. Asked by the court what he had done with the stolen necklace, the accused explained that he had used it to pay a usurer.  

In view of his guilty plea, the court jailed the younger brother for 16 months, also issuing a treatment order, a three-year supervision order and a protection order in favour of the victim.

The case against Anthony Borg will continue next month.
