Man admits to threatening to strangle his wife

A husband who threatened to strangle his wife has been conditionally discharged after pleading guilty.

The man, who cannot be named on the orders of the court, appeared before magistrate Claire Louise Stafrace this morning, charged with causing the woman to fear violence, insulting and threatening her and attacking her.

Inspector Melvyn Camilleri told the court how the woman had recorded the 39-year-old accused as he threatened to wrap a wire around her neck and throttle her. 

Lawyers Franco Debono and Amadeus Cachia, defence counsel, entered a guilty plea.

The court, having seen the man’s admission, handed him a one-year conditional discharge and imposed a protection order in favour of the victim.

Inspector Melvyn Camilleri prosecuted. Lawyer Alfred Abela appeared on behalf of the victim.
