PN executive council summoned to ‘discuss’ and ‘seek direction’ on divorce
The Nationalist Party’s Executive council has been summoned to meet next Thursday with an agenda that calls for a “discussion and direction” on divorce.
Thursday’s meeting will be the first internal party meeting that will discuss divorce since MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando presented a Private Members bill to Parliament that calls for the introduction of divorce.
A parliamentary group meeting held two weeks ago ended with Prime Minister and PN leader Lawrence Gonzi saying that the party will embark on an internal debate, and hinted at the issue being decided by a referendum.
Gonzi however, refused to answer the question if his intention was to call for a referendum during this legislature or the next.
Meanwhile, the Executive council is also expected to discuss the upcoming pensions reform. Government consultant David Spiteri Gingell will be present to make a general presentation of the reforms to be announced in the second pillar.
