Tonio Borg: PN’s challenge is to ‘safeguard its democratic and Christian values’
Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg singles out 'section of society... that should not dominate' PN on issue of divorce.
Borg made no mention of Nationalist MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, who presented a private member's bill for the introduction of divorce, but came close when he stressed that the PN’s challenge is to “safeguard its democratic and Christian values.”
He said these values were an “intrinsic” part of the PN’s history and that the party had “adhered to them in a difficult period willingly and convincingly as it has done since 1880.”
In a speech that concluded the opening session of the PN’s General Council, Tonio Borg said the party had to acknowledge what was good in society.
He said the PN had to determine what was in society’s best interest without being “dominated by any particular category or section of society”.
“This is the party I believe in,” Tonio Borg said, adding that the PN is a party which "chose to belong to everyone".
The PN’s General Council was presented with a document proposing three motions. PN secretary-general Paul Borg Olivier, who moved the motions, said that although some of the decisions taken by the PN in government may have not been popular, they were still taken because “the country’s interests come before those of the party”.
The conference continues on Saturday with a number of workshops and will be concluded on Sunday by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.
