Tonio Borg: PN’s challenge is to ‘safeguard its democratic and Christian values’

Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg singles out 'section of society... that should not dominate' PN on issue of divorce.

Borg made no mention of Nationalist MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, who presented a private member's bill for the introduction of divorce, but came close when he stressed that the PN’s challenge is to “safeguard its democratic and Christian values.”

He said these values were an “intrinsic” part of the PN’s history and that the party had “adhered to them in a difficult period willingly and convincingly as it has done since 1880.”

In a speech that concluded the opening session of the PN’s General Council, Tonio Borg said  the party had to acknowledge what was good in society.

He said the PN had to determine what was in society’s best interest without being “dominated by any particular category or section of society”.

“This is the party I believe in,” Tonio Borg said, adding that the PN is a party which "chose to belong to everyone".

The PN’s General Council was presented with a document proposing three motions. PN secretary-general Paul Borg Olivier, who moved the motions, said that although some of the decisions taken by the PN in government may have not been popular, they were still taken because “the country’s interests come before those of the party”.

The conference continues on Saturday with a number of workshops and will be concluded on Sunday by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

The PN's version of being "christian" is in complete opposition to their version of democracy.

Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor Dr Justine Caruana - does it ring a bell? Who is bullshitting who Dr Borg? http://www.maltastar.com/pages/r1/ms10dart.asp?a=8986 (http://www.maltastar.com/pages/r1/ms10dart.asp?a=8986) A simple process of amplification confirms that Dr Justyne Caruana voted yes as has been stated by the MP herself. This means that the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister as well as other PN MPs lied unashamedly to cast doubt and annul the vote, and the Speaker obliged.

Lier, lier I would like to write some more about the holier then thou Tonio but why waste time, every one knows he is a lier.

Oh come on is anyone really surprised? The deputy Prime Minister was in top form spouting vintage cognitive dissonance! He managed to cancel out his poor attempt at being inclusive by the time he finished his speech. Really no surprises there! There is one narrow PN Church and liberals must convert and obey and even if they don't they still have to vote the PN way mind you. So sayeth Tonio Borg! LOL this is entertainment!! We should be sooo thankful that politicians are so very fond of speaking! The deputy PM's speech is one instance of mind numbing barefaced cheek! He extols inclusion when his real intent is exclusion spot the negative emotion anyone? The enemy has been identified, notice how he strives to create a distance between the PN and certain sections of society (Wonder which other group apart from the pro divorce section of society he is alluding to… any guesses?) When are we going to have a cognitive dissonance monitor, our MPs have been getting away with murder far too long!!

@Raphael: And not just any Catholics either. After all a substantial percentage of Maltese Catholics would vote to allow divorce in a referendum. I don't think he means those.

"Chose to belong to everyone", my foot. What Tonio Borg is effectively saying is that the PN is a party for Catholics only.

“This is the party I believe in,” Tonio Borg said, adding that the PN is a party which "chose to belong to everyone". - The usual rhetoric - Tonio Borg really fits his Party especially in his role fof Leader of the house supporting the lies by his colleagues in the interpretation of Dr. Justyn Caruana's vote - a vote audible to all who really wanted to listen !

And could the minister please explain what exactly are these values?? if he is need i could bring just one example of their values...... The BWSC contract and the way you are trying to fool one and all by walking out from the PAC...... If these are your values then!!!!!!!! cest la vie ( excuse my french )

As it was, as it is and as how it shall always be, 'Relgio et Patria' and nothing else! JPO Private member's bill shall be squashed in Parliament and it shall force the dreaded referendum. Which in turn would save Gonzi's and Muscat bacon. They would discuss the bill for sure but it shall theatrics and then they pass the buck to the people! Very shrewd and convenient! And JPO would have to look for new pastures if he really and truly believes in what he is proposing. If not he would look like a fool and try to limit the enormous damage that he shall have, if he can be believed at all!!!!!

This is a lesson to our politicians- who governs our little rock of a nice island with a population of about just 400,000 people- some of you don't even deserve to be even a servant of this great man: WASHINGTON -- Countless words have already been written about the racial barrier broken in the recent U.S. federal election. Barack Obama, who will be sworn in as the 44th president on January 20, is the first African-American to be elected to the nation's highest office. But there's another, less obvious aspect of Obama that he shares with another minority of Americans who occasionally get the short end of the stick in our society, and it may affect the way he runs the country in subtle ways: Obama is a child of divorce -- and of a stepfamily. In this and other ways, the incoming president represents a new generation in the White House. Obama, 47, grew up during a period in which divorce and the non-traditional family became less of a stigma in American society. His parents, Barack Obama Sr. and Ann Dunham, divorced when he was only three, and he only saw his father (who moved back to Kenya) once more before the latter was killed in a car accident in 1982. Dunham later married an Indonesian student, Lolo Soetoro, and gave birth to Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. So Obama has direct, first-hand familiarity with the sorts of issues faced by much of modern American society -- including the 9.2% of U.S. households headed by single mothers and 28% of children growing up in single-parent homes, according to the Huffington Post. One hopes this will motivate him to help the country's non-traditional families during his presidency.Judging from his political success, Obama's campaign slogan, "Yes We Can," applies to people who grew up in broken or blended families as much as to racial minorities or any other Americans.

Don't you think that mentioning Christian values and democracy in the context of PN - takes either a lot of cheek or a lot of stupidity. And how is it that we have heard so much on divorce but hardly a whimper on child molestation in this country. And then we get PBO talking about the interest of the country. They will conclude the conference at the mostly PN Mosta club, snorting cocaine and celebrating values and integrity with pole dancers.
avatar
Ah but if they "dominate the party" doesn't that make them a majority? Besides, since it's "Christian values" rather than "Catholic values" you mentioned, you might want to keep in mind that the majority of Christian denominations accept divorce.

this is the way a good politician must speaks on human rights- you are outdated:Barak Obama president of the USA: I want to thank the Human Rights Campaign for inviting me to speak and for the work you do every day in pursuit of equality on behalf of the millions of people in this country who work hard in their jobs and care deeply about their families -- and who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. (Applause.) For nearly 30 years, you've advocated on behalf of those without a voice. That's not easy. For despite the real gains that we've made, there's still laws to change and there's still hearts to open. There are still fellow citizens, perhaps neighbors, even loved ones -- good and decent people -- who hold fast to outworn arguments and old attitudes; who fail to see your families like their families; who would deny you the rights most Americans take for granted. And that's painful and it's heartbreaking. (Applause.) And yet you continue, leading by the force of the arguments you make, and by the power of the example that you set in your own lives -- as parents and friends, as PTA members and church members, as advocates and leaders in your communities. And you're making a difference.

so now we all know that the prime minister and his deputy are all against Divorce law- So they are going to discuss it in the parlament? Is this going to be serious? I think it's going to be theatrical. how can it be, when the prime minister and his deputies are allready against it! he said even the PN christian values! So that means that the PN are against divorce.ok so the secular state of Malta is being led by the PN Saints?? I think The PN needs a good change. and they say that we are a secular state -Better laugh than cry Malta a secular state LOL. besides I write not hiding no need to :) I am a citizen of Malta like you are :) I have my rights to speak for me and for my country just like you:) (Saviour) Silvio falzon from Qormi.

Mr.Tonio Borg, sure you can say anyhting you like-So do I and all the people, everybody can say what he/she likes- as long as what we are saying is good for society above all for oneself ,if not than i would be a hypocrit :) But you ,you are speaking of christian values of the PN? on papers it is writen yes, maybe :) ok so not waste time with words:) speaking like that you and all politicians who speaks like that ,you know what that means? That you are outdated , soon you will be gone- sooner or later all will be changed if not this generation the next one- nothing wil stop it- who will stop this changes in the future? you? or your party? No cause even in your party there will be changes . Malta needs modern people who are true to lead the country. so malta can be like the rest of europe. maybe the EU is not intervining on this ,maybe we are just 400,000 people? maybe- just maybe
