PN to decide on divorce this month - PM Gonzi
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has expressed hope that the PN’s Executive concludes its discussion and take a decision on divorce by the end of this month.
Speaking on Net Television, the Prime Minister said that once the decision within the PN was taken, it would be announced and the people would be told how matters would proceed.
It was hoped that the discussion would be concluded this month with a resolution.
He explained that a free, open and interesting discussion was taking place within the party.
“A political party should assume responsibility for its decisions and take a position on matters of principle, without, however, imposing anything on anyone,” the Prime Minister said, while arguing that the PL was doing the complete opposite.
He criticised PN MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s private members’ bill – that triggered the discussion – and branded it as “defective” adding that “Pullicino Orlando had allowed it to lapse and consequently substatituted by a new bill that included the signature of PL MP Evarist Bartolo.”
The Prime Minister said that this new bill was now on the parliamentary agenda and would be debated.
Once there was no electoral mandate for the introduction of divorce and the people were surprised by the move, he [Gonzi] felt the PN should not take an initiative on divorce without hearing the electorate in a free vote.
Asked about the possibility of granting a free vote to MP’s, the Prime Minister said that it made no sense for him to order MPs to vote in one way or another when the decision should be taken by the electorate.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister said that a Bill on cohabitation was being prepared and would be presented to the PN parliamentary group along with other subjects, such as IVF.
