Labour ready to govern ‘with a solid, united team’

Labour leader Jospeh Muscat says a change in government would ‘build a new middle class’.

Just two days before a crucial Budget vote that could see the end of the Nationalist government, Labour leader Joseph Muscat said that this is the "time for a change in direction".

In the mailshot for the Labour Party's electoral reachout, Muscat said that only a change in government could bring about an economic progress that reaches everyone.

"My vision is that everyone in this country can benefit and prosper from the economic growth that is within our reach. We are ready to offer the energy and passion needed to achieve this vision. We are ready to work with you to achieve the social and economic progress that we all feel is possible," Muscat said.

He added that a change in government would build "a new Middle Class".

"We are ready with a solid and united team, with a sense of public service to offer to restore certainty and stability," he added.

Muscat reiterated that it was in the national interest that the PL decided to retain the framework of the Budget as presented by the Nationalist government.

"Once again, I felt that I needed to act in the national interest when it became doubtful whether this government would be able to gather enough support to pass the budget," Muscat said.

"So I gave our assurance that if the budget did not pass and there was a change in government, there would be a guarantee of continuity that would offer peace of mind to families, businesses and investors alike."

Muscat said that a Labour government would retain the core measures of the budget, and strengthen them where possible. He added that where measures were "unjust", his government would address them.

"Let me be very clear - I still believe in our nation, but this government has made it more difficult for us to grow and prosper. It is time for a change in direction," he said.

The propulsive thrust that the PN had when it won power in 1987 has fizzled out and now it is even pushing us backwards. After 25 years in power it would be suicidal for our young nation to keep a GonziPN's system that has failed us big time! It is even insane for a great party that the PN is-to hold on to power it does not deserve! One minister after an other, not to mention the Prime Minister who has made an art out his dysfunctional government-are proving themselves to be nothing but incompetent bunch and are now more concerned in holding on to their seat, or to win a stronger place within the PN's nominclatura, than to work hard for our country. Enough is enough: in the name of the Maltese people you must go!

Calleja, we know where your GonziPN has led us, i.e. straight into the garden wall. Change should always bring benefits, especially when it replaces old hags that have gorged so much off black smoked goodies that the Maltese nation finished not only asset poor, and 40% of its economy depending on public sector employment but with a national debt of €6.5 billion. How's that for explanations and justifications!

We have been hearing that Labour is ready to govern for almost four years now, nothing new. We have been hearing that with Labour in government there will be no political corruption, that Malta will be tops in the EU, that Arriva will arrive on time, that the Judicial system will function without hiccups, that those who don't want to further their studies after 16 years will somehow be given some kind of job, that people will pay less for their energy bills - even those who are getting 40% rebate, that there will be no waiting-lists at Mater Dei, anyway that everything will be rosey, that we wont have to pay more taxes. Quite a wishlist. Shall we send a letter to Greenland?

" It is time for a change in direction," Joseph Muscat said. Mr Muscat does this mean that if and I mean if, the PL wins the election they will try to do away with the political corruption? No explanation needed. Are you going to filter out our judicial system and get rid of some of the incompetent staff that run the Maltese Judicial System? What about Arriva, what about mater Dei? What about the waste of TAX PAYERs money? Are you going to bring down the deficit and if so, can you please tell us how? Talk is very cheap and the Maltese people deserve better from both parties. Stop treating people like second class citizens. True this country needs a change of leadership and both you and Dr Gonzi can do that if you get rid of the heavy baggage you both carry with you. Be very careful what you wish for.
