Despite the publication of the electoral writ and the dissolution of Parliament, promotions were being dished out at the Corradino Correctional Facility in the midst of the electoral campaign, Labour said.

Labour MP Michael Falzon said that after last week's recruitment of 95 new police officers and the promotions of police sergeants, "the situation at the prisons is even worse."

Falzon pointed out that an exercise was being undertaken at the Corradino Correctional Facility to promote a number of persons to the grades of Majors, Supervisors and Assistant Managers.

"For five years, various quarters criticised the situation at the prison for a shortage of staff, including certain grades, however the Nationalist government chose to ignore the criticism," Falzon said.

He added that the exercise was beset with confusion and excessive hurry.

Noting the government's failure in the home affairs and justice sectors, Falzon said: "Once again it is evident that the GonziPN system is absolutely uninterested in the real needs of the home affairs sector but is only driven by political and electoral exigencies."
