PN government will also reduce energy bills – Gonzi, Muscat says PN is 'panicking'
Following Labour’s announcement of its energy plans, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi says his government will do likewise if re-elected.
Adds Joseph Muscat's reaction at 7:01pm
Speaking in Berlin, the Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi announced that if the PN is re-elected it will also reduce energy bills. His statement follows Labour's publication of its plans to reduce electricity bills by 25% and water bills by 5% by next year.
The PN leader and his ministers had never hinted that utility bills will be reduced by a Nationalist administration, however addressing the press in Berlin, where he met German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Gonzi said the PN was committed to reducing energy bills through the eventual conversion of the new Delimara power plant extension to gas.
He also said that the proposed gas pipeline connecting Malta to Sicily will be funded by the EU and private companies.
Commenting on Labour's decision to opt for the transportation of gas by sea instead of a pipeline, Gonzi asked why Labour opted against the pipeline.
He warned that Labour's plans would lead to financial ruin, adding that he was shocked by Labour's energy proposals, Gonzi pointed out that the Opposition's plan was also dependent on two projects initiated by the PN government which Labour had criticised for the past five years; the interconnector and the Delimara power plant extension.
Gonzi noted that the PN will be holding a press conference on Thursday to give a detailed reaction on Labour's proposals and publish its own reports in the following days.
Reacting to Gonzi's statement Labour leader Joseph Muscat said the Nationalist Party was "panicking."
Speaking in during a Labour debate in Mqabba, Muscat said: "First they [PN] claimed it is impossible to lower utility bills, then they said our plan is a gimmick and now they are saying they will do they same."
