Maltese living abroad should vote in embassies - AD
Alternattiva Demokratika says Maltese living abroad should be given opportunity to vote at embassies instead of flying to Malta.
Alternattiva Demokratika reiterated its call for Maltese living abroad to have the right to vote in embassies instead of coming to Malta. Notwithstanding the various amendments to electoral legislation, the Nationalist and Labour parties never agreed on the matter.
According to the AD's spokesman on international affairs Arnold Cassola, statements made by the Prime Minister that it was the Opposition that never agreed to such amendments, "are symptomatic to a democratic stagnation within a two-party system".
"It is a basic right of every Maltese to vote. Maltese living abroad should be given a reasonable amount of time, for example until 15 February, to register at their nearest Maltese Embassy or Consulate," Cassola said.
He said that these persons could cast their vote at their nearest embassies over a span of three days in early March, in the presence of official delegated Maltese diplomats stationed in the embassy.
"This would give ample time for the ballot boxes to be flown over to Malta for the counting," Cassola said.
