No Gozo constituency for Joseph Muscat
Labour react to Lawrence Gonzi's claims of 'gimmicky' Muscat candidature on 13th district.
Labour have denied claims by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi that Joseph Muscat was toying with a second candidature on the Gozo district.
The traditionally Nationalist constituency, which regularly returns three Nationalist MPs to the House, was thought to be Muscat's choice for a second candidature.
Speaking on Radio 101, Gonzi derided Muscat's choice to run on Gozo as "yet another gimmick" from the Labour Party.
In a statement, the PL said Gonzi's statements showed "more negativity a day after desperate-sounding claims about Labour's campaign spending," referring to the prime minister's claim that Labour had spent €1 million on its campaign so far.
"This is another figment of his imagination. Because we know Gonzi must be busy with all the proposals he has put together in a few days to bring down our power bills and reform the economy, we thought we should set the record straight today," Labour said in a statement from its campaign team.
"Lawrence Gonzi was born in Valletta and lives in Marsascala, but at the last election contested the Swieqi district. So much for 'gimmicks'. It might be better for leaders to focus on policies."
Labour said Muscat will be announcing his second district in the next few days.
