Greens want 2,000 first-preference votes for parliamentary seat

AD chairperson invites voters to make history by voting green.

Alternattiva Demokratika has exhorted voters to make history by voting for a multi-party parliament in line with modern European democracies: an invitation to vote green.

AD chairperson Michael Briguglio today appealed to voters to help Alternattiva Demokratika write a new chapter in Malta's history. "Voters can make history by electing Alternattiva Demokratika in parliament with 2,000 first-preference votes in a district," Michael Briguglio said

AD is looking to change Malta's political landscape by ridding it of the two party rule that has dominated Maltese parliament for the past 50 years. "Malta would join the rest of Europe in having parliaments with more than two parties, and AD would ensure that reasoned debate, rather than partisan pique, takes place. In parliament, we will also table legislative proposals for environmental protection, social justice and civil rights.

"I invite voters to make history and to ensure that a progressive voice of reason is elected. Malta would join the rest of Europe in having parliaments with more than two parties, and we would ensure that reasoned debate, rather than partisan pique, takes place. In parliament, we will also table legislative proposals for environmental protection, social justice and civil rights."

Mario Mallia, AD spokesperson for education, said current proposals by the major parties promising "anything from giving medicines to those over 70 regardless of need, and the indiscriminate dishing out of IT tablets, gifts of €500 to €1,000 euros to every youth irrespective of means" would lead to unsustainable finances.

"The PN and PL are throwing away Malta's sustainability with their policies. Populist proposals such as the indiscriminate dishing out of tablets and the provision of medicines for over the 70s regardless of need will lead to unsustainable finances," Mallia said.

AD is committed to shepherding the introduction of both a whistleblowers act as well as legislation on party financing.

"The rights of the large majority of had working, law abiding citizens cannot continue to be trampled upon by political parties financed by big business and held ransom by cowboys and land grabbers. If people want real change, they have to vote for it. AD in parliament will be the voice of reason," Mallia said.

"Considering our own deficit, our downgrading by Standard and Poor's, and the ongoing recession in the euro zone, such politics is tentatively populist and at best irresponsible," Mallia said.

"This will result in hurting the weakest the most. Likewise, neither can the rights of the large majority of hard working, law abiding citizens be trampled upon by political parties financed by big business and held ransom by cowboys and land grabbers.

"AD will ensure that legislation will be in place regarding party financing and whistle blowers amongst others, to make sure that the tragic circus unfolding in the last weeks is avoided at all costs. If people want real change, they have to vote for it. AD in parliament will be the voice of reason."

I appeal to all Maltese level-headed and intelligent voters to think with their own minds during this electoral campaign. Allow me to pass the following comments. To all those who tell us that voting for AD is a lost vote I reply that a lost vote will be that given to both the major parties who, conveniently enough totally forgot that Europe and the world are passing through very hard times, and are promising everything to everyone. I will also not give my vote to people who are only interested in throwing mud at eachother and putting a great show with the sole intention of diving the people even further while preaching that they want to unite us. I will not vote for the two major parties who, when they realised that it is not in their interest, conveniently joined ranks and approved an electoral law thanks to which a third party could not be elected to government unless it has enough votes to elect a person from one district, even if the votes it gains on a national level are much higher than one quote.. I will not vote for a single party to be elected in government and do whatever it wants without the possibility of it being checked and scrutinised. I will not vote for a party which keeps on scaring us about the ghosts of the past. I will not vote for a party that promises us that it changed and that it has all the plans to change the country but does not really tell us what those plans really are in detail. I will vote for a party that speaks not only about what is convenient for itself but has the courage to speak and take a stand about thorny issues. I will vote for a party with intelligent and honest people who are honestly trying to make a difference. I will vote for a party which is not interested in throwing as much mud as possible to everyone else but speaks about its own proposals for our country in an open way. I will vote AD, again. Luck alone won't do it - we need level-headed voters to get rid once and for all the 2-party system. I am sure the voters from H'Attard can muster those 2000 first-count votes.
