European Commission president Barroso congratulates Muscat on electoral victory

European Commission president José Manuel Barroso sent a message of congratulations to Labour leader Joseph Muscat on his party's electoral visit.

"In my own name and on behalf of the European Commission, I congratulate Dr Joseph Muscat for the electoral result obtained. He can count on the continued commitment of the European Commission to work side by side with Malta and to overcome the challenges we face together as a Union. I wish him every success throughout his mandate."

Muscat, 39, who tomorrow is sworn in as Malta's new prime minister, will meet his European Union counterparts in Brussels at the European Council on Thursday.
