Metsola: European Parliament will always stand on the side of truth-seekers
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola says House will ‘channel grief into determination’ to ensure not only better laws for all, but justice for all of those involved in the murder
President Roberta Metsola said the European Parliament will continue to stand with those who seek the truth.
“European Parliament will always stand on the side of truth-seekers. On the side of democracy. On the side of our values,” she said.
Metsola was speaking during the opening of Monday’s plenary in Strasbourg.
“Five years ago, Daphne Caruana Galizia a Maltese investigative journalist was horrifically assassinated outside her home. They used a car bomb to kill a woman - in an attempt to try to silence her, to stop her exposing corruption and organised crime. Then they tried to cover it up. We did not let them,” she said.
The European Parliament President also mentioned Sunday’s protest which was held in Valletta. She was one of the speakers who addressed protestors in front of court.
“Last night, as the President of the European Parliament, I addressed the thousands who gathered in Malta,” she said. “I promised that this House will channel grief into determination to ensure - not only better laws for all - but justice for all of those involved in her murder and justice for the stories that Daphne died to bring to light.”
She said Caruana Galizia “was an extraordinary journalist and a fierce fighter for democracy.”
“Those responsible for the crime, those who let it happen and those who tried to cover it up must face justice,” she insisted.
