Prime Minister Robert Abela reiterated the importance of reaching an agreement for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid access for those in need in Gaza during a summit on Wednesday.

He also emphasised that hostages must be released while Israel’s realities need to be addressed. Moreover, he stressed the importance of working with the Palestinian authorities to implement necessary reforms.

“These are essential if we are to make irreversible progress towards a two-state solution and prevent further escalation in the region,” the Prime Minister said.

Abela was speaking during the first summit between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council in Brussels. The summit aimed to develop closer partnerships with the member states of this council, which include the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait.

Abela also addressed Iran’s involvement, not only in the region but also in Europe, particularly through its cooperation with Russia.

He stated: “We must work together to convince Iran that facilitating the conflict in Ukraine cannot be tolerated.”

Referring to the situation in Ukraine, the Prime Minister reiterated that the role of the international community is crucial in securing lasting peace. He added that common principles such as sovereignty and territorial integrity must be protected.

Abela also highlighted the potential of partnerships between the European and Gulf regions, explaining that opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy and maritime transport could strengthen commercial relations between the two regions.

The Prime Minister concluded his address by noting that the ability of both regions to work together, share their knowledge, and build strong ties will determine whether these challenges are successfully addressed. “The world looks to regions like ours to lead by example, and I am confident that through dialogue and cooperation, we can make a positive contribution to shaping the future of international relations.”
