Alfred Sant says PN is refusing to accept electoral loss
Labour MEP hopeful accuses Opposition of ignoring electoral mandate; says Labour Party ‘deserves’ a strong mandate in upcoming elections.
Labour MEP candidate Alfred Sant has lambasted the Opposition for ‘refusing to accept its electoral loss’, accusing the Nationalist Party of scuppering the government’s work.
In March 2013, the PN, under its former leader Lawrence Gonzi, suffered a catastrophic electoral defeat and recorded a 36,000-vote discrepancy.
“The Opposition,” Alfred Sant argued, “is effectively ignoring the strong mandate that the government was given by the electorate. Instead, it is trying to hinder the government’s measures – projects which have been approved by the people.”
While acknowledging that the Labour Party committed mistakes during its first year in government, Sant, nevertheless, insisted that the Labour Party “deserves” a strong mandate in the upcoming MEP elections.
“Despite some mistakes it may have made, the Labour administration clearly deserves a vote of confidence by the electorate for the dynamic approach it has instilled into national affairs,” he said.
Former Prime Minister Sant - who in 2003 championed the Labour Party’s failed attempt against EU accession – insisted that the government’s conduct to “enhance Malta’s national interests” needs to be carried forward into Malta’s relations with the European Union.
