EU closes nine infringement procedures against Malta

The EU's college of commissioners closed nine of its twenty infringement procedures against Malta

The European Union’s College of Commissioners today closed nine infringement procedures against Malta, one of which had been open since 27 June 2008, the government said in a statement.

The statement added that eight of the infringements related to non-transposition of EU Directives, whilst one related to an implementation infringement.

A spokesman for the Ministry for European Affairs and Implementation of the Electoral Manifesto (MEIAM) welcomed the College’s decision and said that it was a reflection of the Government’s commitment to maintaining Malta’s good record in implementing Directives correctly and taking early remedial action when this does not happen.

According to the government, there are currently 20 infringement procedures open against Malta, ten of which date back before 9th March 2013 and one of which has been referred to the Court of Justice. Three of the open infringements are, however, dormant.

The MEAIM spokesman added that the Ministry was actively following the open infringements, in consultation with the other ministries concerned, and had submitted replies to the Commission.
