Eurogroup: No conclusions reached, ministers to meet again this week

EU institutions now assessing proposals • ‘First general opinion’ of Greek proposals that they are ‘broad and comprehensive’

A meeting of the Eurogroup attended to by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel lasted barely an hour, placing the ball in the EU leaders’ court, meeting this evening.

No agreement was reached as the EU institutions will now examine the proposals that came in last night from Greece.

Eurgroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem said it was “a positive sign” that no proposals from the Greek government were passed on this morning – having albeit came in during the night.

Because the institutions had little time to examine the Greek proposals in detail, the Eurogroup has asked the institutions to go through the proposals and get the specifics and calculations. Dijsselbloem said that the institutions will also work out a list of the prior actions “to which it all boils down to”.

The plan is for the Eurogroup to reach a deal later this work.

“The work can start immediately and, if necessarily, the eurogroup will have another meeting later this week for the final outcome of talks with the Greek Asked whether the Greek proposals on pension reform and retirement schemes – among others – were satisfactory, Dijsselbloem gave a generic reply, limiting himself to a generic overview of the proposals.

“The first general opinion was that it was broad and comprehensive. We now need to look at the specifics to see whether it adds up to the fiscal requirements. In general terms it is a basis to really restart talks and see results in coming days.”
