'Valletta summit is a unique opportunity for change' - Dalli

MEP Miriam Dalli's speech at the European Parliament follows the aftermath of the Balkans Summit which clearly highlighted the internal tension within the block that have become synonymous with Europe’s disjointed stance on immigration.

Days after the Balkans Summit brought together leaders from Central and Eastern Europe and days before the Valletta Summit which will see European and African leaders meet in Malta, Maltese MEP Miriam Dalli has stressed that now more than ever Europe must act as one.

Dalli's speech at the European Parliament follows the aftermath of the Balkans Summit which clearly highlighted the internal tension within the block that have become synonymous with Europe’s disjointed stance on immigration.

In her speech Dalli stated that what Europe needs is the complete opposite. Europe needs to be strong and bold in calling for African leaders to give their undivided attention to their people and their aspirations before any other interest.

She went on to highlight the causes of migration from Africa, stressing the need for African leaders to shoulder their responsibilities. Dalli said that the EU needs to be clear on what it expects from African leaders.

“Immigration flows are happening because wars, instability, poverty, lack of employment and breaches of fundamental human rights are still widespread in certain African and Arab countries.

"The EU needs to make sure that the aid it provides results in concrete changes. We need to be strong when we request that leaders of these countries need to ensure that they give priority to their people.

"The issue is not a simple one, and for that reason Europe must stand united.

"If we truly want to address the situation in a serious and concrete manner, which makes a difference then we need to be united and come out strong" concluded Dalli.
