MEP says Europe must tackle causes of migration, not just symptoms
MEP ALfred Sant tells Croatian TV that the sources of migration ought to be tackled in an economic, social and humane way, rather than just the symptoms
MEP Alfred Sant has told Croatian TV Station HRT that Europe must tackle the sources of migration flows not just the symptoms.
Sant was being interviewed on migration by the Croatian TV Station at the European Parliament, where he explained that the EU has a big problem to assimilate all the people coming from different countries. He added that these arrivals were causing disruptions of services, the disruption of social coherences and as well security.
“Immigration was and still is a big problem and the same thing happens in Malta. We see that with a very small influx of migrants we can get destabilised...one has to be pragmatic – one has to take the solutions that are available,” he said.
Sant said that the agreement with Turkey, for instance, is very fragile.
“However we have to question whether there is an option or an alternative to it? And then of course there are the developments that will flow.... if the flow of migrants from Turkey stops, it is very probable that it will start again form North Africa. One has to have a solution to that. The solution has got to be social, economic, humane, and it also has to be far reaching,” he added.
