Delimara extension inaugurated with pollution permits still pending

Labour MP Leo Brincat said Delimara’s new extension will start producing energy without the necessary integrated pollution prevention control (IPPC) permits from MEPA.

Brincat said the Prime Minister had announced that the first units from the Delimara power station’s fuel-oil powered extension will be commencing operations by May 2012.

Criticised for its high toxic waste production, the new extension is not yet covered by the IPPC permits that regulate the pollution from the turbine, Brincat said. “These environmental permits regulate the operations of various plants in Malta to safeguard citizens from threats to environmental health.”

The MP said said that the government had not even ensured that the Marsa power station was in conformity with the pollution ceilings covered by its own IPPC permits. “This means we should be worried about Delimara’s pollution control,” Brincat said.
