GRTU hits out at TM, MRA and urges the PM to intervene on port access
The Chamber of SMEs (GRTU) has hit out at Transport Malta and the Resources Authority as the regulating bodies over “incompetence” and “wrong decisions” that are causing huge problems in the Grand Harbour.
In a statement, the GRTU has urged the Prime Minister to intervene as “whoever is responsible” has proved to be incompetent.
It said that cargo handlers (burdnara) are being faced with serious problems to access and exit the port, especially the recently privatised Deep Water Quay, that is now run by VGT company.
The quay has recently been allocated to a film company that is presently shooting a movie.
The GRTU said that Transport Malta is obliged to ensure that VGT guarantees that services at the Grand Harbour remain efficient as this has caused serious problems to cargo handlers to access and to work on imported cargo by containers that arrive in Malta on a daily basis.
It added that apart from problems at the quay, major road works in the area have made it difficult for cargo handlers to drive and manoeuvre their long vehicles.
Due to a series of “wrong and incompetent decisions” strategic parts of the harbour are now either very limited to work within or worse, have become inaccessible to cargo handlers, causing serious problems for local businesses.
