Wied il-Ghasel rehabilitation works given go-ahead

The water channel of Wied il-Ghasel which today is in a dilapidated state, will undergo major rehabilitation works following the approval of a development permit by the MEPA Board earlier today.

The works, which cover a stretch of over 1500 meters from Ghajn Rihana to Santa Katerina Chapel in Burmarrad,  will include the clean up of Wied Il-Ghasel, the dam near Ghajn Rihan, the placing of precast elements to consolidate the earth embankments and access roads. The project also includes the installation of pathways and bridges, the planting of indigenous trees in the side embankments and the construction of earth retentions to break the rapid flow of flood waters as well as to maximize the water retention capacity of the valley.

The MEPA Board refused a large residential project, comprising the development of 72 apartments and penthouses, a shop and 84 garages in the locality of Fgura. The site which today houses a disused lime kiln/concrete factory and a number of lock-up garages, covers an area of nearly 2,921m² and has a frontage on three streets, namely Triq  Hompesch, Triq il-Karmelitani and Triq il-Liedna.

The MEPA Board concluded that the proposed residences in the semi-basement of this internal development, create an over development and poor quality apartments. The Board noted that it will only continue to favour and support quality residential developments that can safeguard a good standard of living.

The Mepa Board also approved the installation of two temporary floating pontoons at the edge of the shore line exactly opposite the new Royal Malta Yacht Club at Marsamxett Harbour in Ta’ Xbiex.

The Royal Malta Yacht Club, which is an established organiser of sailing events of the highest level has been given this 2 year planning permit to accommodate the growing number of international boats that come over to Malta to participate in these sailing events.
