EP hopes for ratification of additional MEP seats by end-2011

The European Parliament will be welcoming 18 new MEPs – including Labour MEP Joseph Cuschieri – before the end of 2011 as 22 member states have now ratified the provisions for the new parliament as laid down in the Lisbon Treaty.

Although the Treaty has been in force since December 2009, the new 18 MEPs from 12 new member states were not instantly allocated a seat in the EP due to a the long process of ratificiation from the national parliaments of all 27 member states.

In a meeting in Strasbourg this week, the EP’s burea noted that only a small number of member states were left to ratify the extra seats, namely Germany, the UK, Romania, Greece and Belgium.
