Mugliett votes against Labour motion but insists on explanations by PM
Nationalist MP Jesmond Mugliett declared he was voting against Labour's honoraria motion, but expressed reservations on the issue.
Mugliett stressed that there are many questions that remain unanswered mainly on how Cabinet’s decision was not communicated to the Leader of the Opposition, MPs and the general public.
“I am not convinced on this part of the story and I believe that government has a responsibility to clarify on this mistake as we risk a similar mistake being repeated.”
He urged the Prime Minister to clarify his statement made during the PN parliamentary group meeting that this was “an administrative mistake”, and added that the Prime Minister is duty bound to explain what kind of administrative mistake was committed and what measures have been taken to address this mistake.
Mugliett disagreed with the justifications made before and now about the issue that the increases were “affordable”, because Cabinet was smaller is an insult to previous Cabinet members like himself.
The PN MP described today’s vote as “superfluous,” because “it is not constructive and has no intention to change anything, but to affirm public criticism which is already know and government must take note of it.”
Finally, Mugliett stressed that he will vote with government as some tend to assume that a vote against would threaten government’s stability. However, he declared that the recent referendum has shown that a single MP can make a difference and this is the difference that can be made so that disagreements can be sorted and balanced.
