Malta has 57 women inmates at the Corradino Correctional Facility of which 18 are foreigners, information tabled in parliament shows.

The foreign inmates are from Britian, Ivory Coast, Eritrea, France, Guinea, Hungary, Indonesia, Morocco, Nigeria, Panama, Somalia, Spain and Venezuela.

The information was tabled in parliament by National Security Minister Byron Camilleri in reply to a question by Opposition shadow minister Beppe Fenech Adami.

A January parliamentary question showed the prison population stood at 864 by the end of December. Almost a third of prison inmates were awaiting trial or sentencing.
