Josef Bonnici takes over as Central Bank Governor
Former PN minister Josef Bonnici has been formally appointed as the new Central Bank Governor.
Bonnici, 57, takes over from Michael C. Bonello who relinquished his post after almost ten years in office and overseeing the changeover to the euro from the Maltese Lira in 2008.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi handed the letter of appointment to Josef Bonnici yesterday evening.
Josef Bonnici is a Professor of Economics and Head of Department at the University of Malta, focusing primarily on Monetary Economics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics.
Bonnici graduated in Economics from the University of Malta, and read for his Masters and PhD from Simon Fraser University, Canada specialising in the areas of Monetary Economics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics.
He was awarded a Doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa from Rikkyo University in Japan. He has published books and many articles in professional Economics journals, and lectured at Deakin University in Australia, and Simon Fraser University in Canada.
Bonnici returned to Malta in 1988 as an advisor to the Prime Minister on economic affairs. Subsequently he became active in the political field and was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in Finance (1993-1995) and Minister for Economic Services in two legislatures (1995-1996, 1998-2003). His portfolio of responsibilities included that of economic development policy.
He was an Observer member of the European Parliament upon Malta's entry into the EU, and his last appointment was that of a Member of the European Court of Auditors, with responsibility for the institution's Statement of Assurance (DAS) and Elected Dean of the Coordinating Chamber of the Court.
