Pilots obtain anti-strike breaking measures from international body
Pilots' association informs international body of intent to strike at Air Malta and obtains anti-strike breaking measures.
The airline pilots association (ALPA) has formally obtained support from the International Federation of Airline Pilots (IFALPA) in the event of industrial action for July 16.
In correspondence seen by MaltaToday, ALPA president Dominic Azzopardi has received the support of IFALPA for a series of strike breaking measures, whereby no pilots, chartered aircraft or any other aviation services may be rendered to the Maltese authorities should Air Malta pilots ground aircraft on July 16.
The correspondence to IFALPA confirms that Air Malta pilots will formally register an industrial dispute according to law on Wednesday 13 July, and action will kick-in at midnight of July 16.
The measure, known as ‘Mutual Assistance’, provides international support to Air Malta pilots.

Azzopardi is claiming that part of the €52 million bailout for Air Malta has been used to pay off debts the airline had with Bank of Valletta, one of the airline’s shareholders.
“We know that part of the €52 million government gave to Air Malta for restructuring has gone to Bank of Valletta. ALPA has confirmation that the bank threatened Air Malta into closing debts it held with the bank.”
“I am absolutely certain that a substantial part of the €52 million were used used to pay off certain loans with BOV. And this was when the Ernst & Young report clearly said that a specific loan to the airline should have been extended, rather than paid off,” Azzopardi said.
