Air Malta management 'concerned' over promises and political interference

MaltaToday is informed that Air Malta management is worried over Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi's assurances to the pilots' association last Wednesday.

Air Malta management has reportedly expressed concern that the Prime Minister's meeting with Dominic Azzopardi last Wednesday may stall many of the much needed reforms that need to be taken.

The PM's last minute meeting with Azzopardi resulted in assurances that the government would act to improve contracts with Malta International Airport (MIA).  But MaltaToday has discovered that Air Malta and MIA have already been discussing the issues of charges before the meeting at Castille.

During the meeting with Dominic Azzopardi, the PM appeared content that Azzopardi had decided to call off the strike.  But there is no clear time-line for meeting Azzopardi's demands, many of which would result in rescinding many of the commercial contracts and many insiders believe that the Prime Minister has simply bought time.

Today's protest march in Valletta is being seen as a non-event and a Godsend for the General Workers' Union which has been advised not to fall into the trap of creating industrial strife, as this could boomerang on the Labour party and its electoral chances.

you see? Nothing has changed. There will always be political interference. And those political appointees in the boardroom drinking whisky will be too comfortable and accomodating lest they loose this opportunity that has befallen them. The board should have resigned en masse to show the government that they mean business.

I think CEO's salary has a lot to do with it. I don't beleive they couldn't have found a reliable person with much less than half a million a year. If Malta that boasts of a University population of some 8000 has not produced enough managers CEOs or whatever to run this business PROPERLY then it's about time we shut down University courses in management and save some cash on stipends.

@wenzu Political interference with Air Malta did not start with PN and will not end when there is a change in government either. @xifajk What does the salary of the CEO has got to do with it? The problem is that one has to let these people earn their salary and not tell them how things are done rather than the other way round. If that is management Maltese style than that title is well deserved.

The whole history of mismanagemant at Air Malta, under PN, has been that of political interference. So what's new?

And what about the €500,000 pay packet without paying a dime? Those who earn just €10,000 are paying their Income Tax. Discrimination, corruption, daylight robbery and Dictatorship at its best Veru CUC il-Malti

Erm-excuse me but wasn't Air Malta senior management present at the said meeting when such "assurances" were given by the PM and if they were concerned or "worried" then surely that was the forum to express such? When will these "assurances" be enacted?

That is what I believe ALPA are being taken for a flight. . When gonzi promises something it means he will ultimately do the opposite. . GONZI CAN'T BE TRUSTED.
