Regional Road tailback due to longer-than-expected road works, says Transport Malta

A massive jam due to unfinished works along Regional Road was due to emergency road works that extended past 6am completion deadline, says Transport Malta.

Police earlier urged motorists to avoid heading to Marsa from Sta Venera and where possible make use of alternative routes.

Due to the works going on, traffic flow fall on to one lane, as traffic congestion continued building up.

Transport Malta later explained that the traffic tailbacks in Marsa were due to works being carried out.  It said that it received a request yesterday for emergency works to be carried out by Enemalta Corporation along Triq it-Tigrija, Marsa.

TM said that it had issued an emergency permit allowing the execution of the works to commence after 7pm and to be carried out and completed by 6 am on Thursday.

"For reasons beyond Transport Malta’s control, works by Enemalta Corporation were not completed within the given time-frame and were continued this morning," it said.

Apologising for any inconvenience caused, TM said that traffic notices for emergency works are not usually published or announced.

"Transport Malta will be addressing the issue with Enemalta Corporation in a bid to ensure that such incidents are not repeated," it added.

Inefficiency, inefficiency. TM must have contingency alternative routes in case of emergencies. Does these routes exist on any type of scenarios in case of air disasters, earthquakes, emergency road works? No. Inefficiency again. Who cares? TM don't for sure.

Oh yes the above has really put our minds at rest, what they fail to say is that since the the start of the Arriva state of the art fiasco, the number of cars on our roads has increased so much that there are traffic jams on all major roads at all times of the day. And yet in this country nobody takes responsibility, or are we going to commission more studies and reports to try and fix the mess that these experts have got us into in the first place. What a country, how we all wish that we were as organised as Mickey Mouse land.

Driving around is part of my job and after about 13 yrs of doing so I am on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I cannot stand it anymore traffic everywhere even in summer months with all the schools closed , wardens on the look out to ambush you, cameras, no parking places, slow and stupid drivers everywhere and obviously on the fast lane !, please someone DO SOMETHING ,I used to love my job but I do not know how much I can take anymore-- :(

It seems that works have been extended for more time as just passed by regional road and there is still a long traffic jam in the area!!! Simple equation: Japan quake, repaired major road 6 days Malta: 10x3m dug up hole and repairs more than 24 hrs!!!!!

It is true that Transport Malta executives, being Maltese, must be cwiec. But do they have to plumb such abysmal depths ?

Alternative routes? Garibaldi Road closed! Council of Europe Road closed! Xatt l-Ghassara tal-Gheneb closed! What's the alternative? Stay at home??? The excellent track record of this government in the field of transportation becomes even better with this one! (sic). Remember the Arriva debacles, Bisazza Street debacle, speed cameras everywhere, roads getting narrower to "calm" traffic but instead makes drivers more furious, and the list goes on. But it's not the government's fault. Never. Do you buy that? http://mazzun.wordpress.com/2011/07/11/kaz-klassiku-tal-hmar-iwahhal-fdembu/

I know that my comment will fall on deaf ears, but why couldn’t the road works be carried out at night causing the least inconvience to drivers. Because of the Popes last visit I remember the junction at Fleur-de-Lys road being given a face lift with complete resurfacing and with the minimum of inconvience because it was carried out at night. That’s how it should be done. And whist on the subject of road repairs, or should I say lack off. When is the bridge before entering St Julian’s tunnel going to be repaired? Also the lights inside the tunnels could do with a good cleaning, in fact all the tunnels could do with a whitewash,. One could go on and on and on about the state of the roads, unfortunately we all know that no matter how much we moan nothing will ever get done.

God help us come sept when the school run starts. Surely better planning can be arranged. Can i also recommend that police beat the living crap out of those tossers who jump the queue and cause an even bigger mess.
