6,212 registering for work in June

In June, the registered unemployed persons dropped by 563 when compared to the same period last year, as total persons registering for work amounted to 6,212.

Basing on administrative records held at the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC), the National Statistics Office (NSO) said that the number of persons registering for work during last month stood at 6,212.

Of these, 5,525 were registering in Malta and 687 were registering in Gozo.

When compared to June 2010, the registered unemployed dropped by 563 in Malta and just four persons in Gozo.

The number of men on the unemployment register amounted to 4,896 (78.8%) while women numbered 1,316. Registered unemployment decreased for both men and women when compared to the previous year, by 487 and 76 respectively. Registered unemployment also declined across all the age groups.

This includes a drop of 198 persons among those unemployed aged 45 and over.

Those registering for work for less than 20 weeks went down by 120, while those who had been registering for work for more than one year dropped by 334 (12.9%).

NSO also reported that the number of persons with disability registering for work under Part 1 of the register amounted to 393. In comparison to a year ago, this segment of unemployed dropped by 47.

Most unemployed men were seeking occupations related to services, sales and crafts, whereas women sought clerical and service-oriented occupations.
