ST Microelectronics shutdown prompts concerns of underling problems

The shutdown taking place in ST Microelectronics for the first time in 10 years is causing worries among both the General Workers’ Union and the factory’s workers.

Weekly newspaper Illum reports how the shutdown will affect one of three sections within the company, adding that a production line will close from Sunday to Sunday and every worker would have taken 48 hours of leave.

The last time the line had experienced a shutdown as in during the summer of 2001.

Contacted by Illum, the GWU’s Technology, Electronics, and Communication section secretary Andrew Mizzi said that the fact that a shutdown is happening is already cause for concern.

“This means there is a lack of orders,” he told Illum.
