They tried to make me a scapegoat - Jason Micallef

Former Labour Party General Secretary discusses his past within the Labour Party as a scapegoat for the 2008 electoral loss, and his upcoming candidature in the general election.

In his interview in two years, former Labour Party general secretary Jason Micallef tells weekly newspaper Illum how his resignation took place against his will. "But I understood that it was in the interest for the party that I move along a different path."

Asked whether the decision pained him, Micallef said the end of his duties as general secretary brought with it considerable disappointment to him, his loved ones, and friends that helped him get where he did.

Micallef also spoke of the aftermath of the loss of the 2008 general election, and how it affected him personally. "I was an orphan of the loss. They tried to make me a scapegoat," he said. "It's past now. But I believe that there were Labourites who believed this criticism."

Micallef also confirmed that he aims to contest the upcoming general election, adding that he plans to contest on the 11th district, that which comprises Mosta, Mdina, Attard, and Balzan

@RJ I hope you are one of the insiders from the progressive & moderate party. They need someone like you to DOT the I's and cross the T's. Who knows you might become as famous as Jason for denying Malta and the Maltese people a chance to get rid of the PN while getting rid of Alfred Sant. Let's also hope that you were not involved in losing that election because from what one can read here, you are not the brightest star in the PL galaxy. You would certainly make a perfect target for the PN.

@ fehmawvuci Yes. it's easy to mistake one Jason for another. Just ask Paul Borg Olivier.

In the aftermath of the 2008 the Nationalist Party's media managed to knock down the whole of the Labour Administration and against all odds Jason Micallef managed to get re-elected as Secretary General. With hindsight to all that happened back then, one has to admit that this man is a valid assest to the PL. Well, I’m interested to see what will happen next…

@fehmawvuci - I would not take criticism from a person who can't tell the difference between "loose" - "lose" and "it's" and "its".
avatar
@GAHAN To set yourself loose from the losses of the party and play victim. And the name is Jason Micallef. Be careful when you close your front door.

If one had to judge on the last election results one can conclude that Jason Micallef and Dr Alfred Sant had managed to gain and close the the 15000 gap from the last election with all the punches below the belt that PL sustained and the media onslaught against it than Jason & Sant managed quite well and should not be blamed for this loss.

@ fehmawvuci How much intellect do you need to tell the difference between "loser" and "looser"?

As somebody has already said, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Jason Azzopardi s a nice enough guy, but in politics being nice is not enough - or even particularly useful. He does not have the sharpness and the guile to match somebody like for example, Joe Saliba who ran rings about him. Look at how he was outmaneuvered and outplayed in the JPO/Sant business. The way that Sant was left for about 30 minutes looking sullen and baffled under the merciless eyes of the TV cameras while JPO taunted him could well have been the turning point in the election. And Jason Azzopardi has to carry the blame for that.

@CJF There are miles apart from the well loved Freddy Micallef to Jason Micallef .No comparism ///// Up for you to think what I mean

The proof is in the eating, and I'm sure that Jason will proof that he is a success person in politics, same as his uncle. All the best Jason

Surely malta Today cannot be running out of news stories to post on it's website? So why bother with such thrashy journalism? What a pathetic looser ! It must be very rewarding to be used as a scapegoat and then handed the chairmanship of One tv. Is it any wonder that the PL has remained in opposition for the last twenty years as it depended on the intellect of such loosers.

But didn't Jason compound matters when after the elections he went on Xarabank and Joe Saliba made mince meat out of him when he did not seem to know the number of new voters! As a Secretary General he should have made his homework more carefully.
