21,548 operations at MDH in six months
During the fist half of 2011, Mater Dei Hospital performed 21,548 operations – an increase of 4,400 interventions over the same period in 2007.
According to a statement issued by the Health Ministry, Mater Dei Hospital carried an average of 119 operations per week, including Saturdays and Sundays.
The total amount registered an increase of 4,400 operations over the 17,108 operations carried at St Luke’s Hospital during the first six months of 2007.
When compared to the same period last year, this year’s amount increased by 927 from last year’s 20,621.
MDH also registered a “record” number of operations in 2010 which amounted to 41,794.
So far, May 2011 registered the highest number of operations with 3,762.
“Several initiatives are being taken to increase the operations and decrease the waiting lists,” the statement said, adding that more nurses and professionals working in this sector have been employed, whilst theatre hours have increased.
The Ministry also reminded that, with arrangements with two private clinics, government will be paying for cataracts operations.
“Initiatives undertaken are leaving their fruit,” Health Minister Joe Cassar said. “Operations, medical services, prevention services and free medicines are increasing.”
Whilst adding that government is giving more funds to provide Maltese and Gozitans with the best health care services possible, he thanked all those employed within the health sector for their work.
