PL condemns government’s delay in confirming prisoner’s escape

The Labour Pary criticises government for taking seven hours to inform the public that a prisoner had escaped whilst receiving treatment at Mater Dei Hospital.

The Opposition’s spokesman for security Michael Falzon accused government of trying to hide the information from the public and described it as "lack of seriousness" towards the country’s security.

“This attitude of concealment is a reflection of the unprofessional way in which government is leading the country’s internal affairs,” Falzon said.

He said that government issued a press statement only after the case was revealed by ONE News during its noon edition and only after that the news agency phoned up the Justice Ministry to confirm the news.

Falzon added that one should look at this news in light of the fact that government did not take any action, despite the number of times the Labour Party had highlighted shortcomings in the system.
