Enforcement of EU citizens' civil rights extends - AD
Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party reiterated its stand against discrimination to non-Maltese EU citizens who live in Malta.
AD spokesperson for EU and International Affairs Arnold Cassola said AD was satisfied that Nationalist MEP Simon Busuttil is working to stop the discrimination against some 25,000 EU citizens living in Malta.
The European Commission is currently assessing the legality of the terms and conditions imposed by ARMS Ltd. on non-Maltese EU identity card holding citizens in this regard.
“AD expresses its satisfaction that Nationalist MEP, Dr. Simon Busuttil, has followed AD's lead in ensuring the enforcement of EU civil rights regarding institutional discrimination against 25,000 non-Maltese EU identity card holding citizens in respect of their household water and electricity bills,” Cassola said.
AD Spokesperson for Citizenship and Migration Robert Callus said that AD has received numerous complaints concerning discrimination against non-Maltese EU citizens vis-à-vis personal banking, telephony, internet service provision, shipping/owner fees, the two-tier bus fare scheme, European health insurance cards (EHICs), licensing fees for 'foreign' market property rentals and defendants' rights.
“These issues need to be addressed by the competent authorities,” he said.
Michael Briguglio, AD’s Chairperson, reiterated that non-Maltese EU citizens living in Malta should not be discriminated against.
“We shall keep making the necessary pressure in order that such discrimination is stopped,” Briguglio said. “We also insist that Maltese citizens living in other EU member states should be granted full rights in the respective countries.”
