AFM to benefit from US$4.7 million Pentagon grant in military equipment

The Pentagon is sending more than US$25 million in military equipment, small boats and other support to Tunisia and Malta, The Washington Post reported this morning.

The funding, detailed in documents obtained by The Associated Press, is part of a US$44 million Pentagon aid package, and will serve to bolster Tunisia’s fledgling democracy.

Tunisia was the birthplace of the Arab awakening early this year, after a popular uprising there launched a wave of anti-government protests and calls for greater freedoms and democracy across the Middle East. A number of countries have been watching Tunisia to see how it handles the transition.

It is expected that Malta is set to benefit from a US$4.7 million grant that includes night vision equipment, computers, boats and training for maritime personnel.
