PN dismisses criticism over Moody’s credit downgrade as ‘puerile’
The Nationalist Party reacted to criticism by Labour Leader Joseph Muscat over Malta’s credit downgrade by credit audit agency Moody’s by dismissing it as "puerile" and pointless.
The PN was reacting to statements by Muscat earlier who said that Moody’s recent downgrade is not an unrecoverable tragedy but it is a sign that government must heed to ward off negative forecast.
In its reaction, the party hit out at Muscat, saying that “bickering over the Moody’s report is puerile and will get us nowhere. Castigating Government, because Moody’s downgraded Malta’s credit rating by one notch, is childish.”
The party said the Moody’s report “gives a very sober picture of the international economic realities and how these economic realities, not least the austerity measures adopted by other European governments’, have a direct impact on Malta’s open economy.”
It added that Malta is surrounded by choppy economic international waters, market unrest, and political turmoil in the Arab world.
The PN however conceded that public finances need to be strengthened and added that further job creation is a top priority, whilst less bureaucracy would do to ensure that Malta remains competitive.
It added that Malta still should be proud of its achievements in having “the fastest growing economy in the euro zone” and “the fifth lowest unemployment rate in the EU,” describing these as “proof enough that sound economic policies and the resilience of the Maltese workforce is paying dividends.”
The PN also insisted that what is required however “is to brush aside petty partisan politics and get our act together so as to ensure further success for Malta and the Maltese.”
At the same time, it hit out at Muscat for saying that government is in denial as to how it should come clean on Malta’s economic situation.
“If there is someone who, time and again, has proved to be living in a world of make-believe, shockingly oblivious to what is happening around us, it is precisely Joseph Muscat with his ostrich-like way of doing politics,” the Nationalist party said.
“It is high time for Joseph Muscat to realize that cheap shots and hollow promises will get us nowhere – the Labour Leader would better employ his time to come up with concrete and sensible economic policies,” it added.
“Somebody should tell Joseph Muscat that emulating ostriches is a sure recipe for economic disaster.”
