Inflation rising faster than salaries - Labour MP
Malta’s inflation rate is one of the highest amongst EU member states for food and energy prices, Labour MP and shadow finance minister Karmenu Vella said.
The MP said inflationary pressures were affecting business sectors’ competitiveness and profits. “Amongst the reasons that Moody’s have Lawrence Gonzi’s government a negative certification is that Malta’s economy is not growing at a satisfactory rate,” Vella said.
The MP also said inflation had affected real wages for households. “While average wages in EU increased by 12.5% and inflation by 9% in the last five years, Malta’s average wage only increased by 5% while inflation rose by 9.5%. Our wages are not rising enough to cover the inflationary rise,” Vella said.
He accused the government of doing little to control inflation, citing excess fees, taxation and other tariffs and the energy bills, as the reason for the inflationary rise. “GonziPN is failing to deliver results in the economy and for our families,” Vella said.
