Watch | Sandblasting activity on B'kara church causes problems for residents
Residents complain over the dust generated from the sandblasting activity on the St Therese church in Birkirkara.
Footage sent in by Birkirkara residents shows workers sweeping debris and throwing it down from the roof of the church until it reaches a funnel.
Despite the type of inconvenience similar work could create, a MEPA spokesperson said the works did not need a permit. "After members of the Enforcement unit visited the site they concluded that no permit was required for the renovation works going on," the spokesman said.
Contacted by MaltaToday Fr Juan Debono, the friar responsible of the church, said there were only few occasions when their work could have created any inconvenience. "We soon addressed the problem as we started dampening the debris before throwing it away to try and minimise the dust cloud as possible," he said, adding that the work was finished on Thursday afternoon.
