Opposition leader wants to ‘make councils accountable’

Labour leader Joseph Muscat calls for ‘fresh faces’ for the coming Local Council elections.

Following an article he wrote in General Workers Union daily l-orizzont over the “racket” of the local warden system, Opposition leader Joseph Muscat said today “it’s time to shake up local government to ensure it is on the side of families.”

Writing in the PL’s e-newsletter, Muscat said Labour intends to present fresh ideas in the local councils elections - to be held in March – and, calling for new councillors, said “it needs fresh faces too.”

Referring to what he said in previous events,  Muscat wrote that he has made it “crystal clear” that he will not be supporting as candidates those people who see councils as extensions of government’s bureaucracy.

“There is no place for such councillors, present or aspiring, on our March 2012 local elections list.

I want to cut bureaucracy and make councils accountable.”

Muscat said the role of the local councils is to provide services that improve the living conditions of families in Malta and Gozo.

“The majority of councillors work hard in the best interests of their locality yet a minority take a bureaucratic approach, putting obstacles first and the interests of families second,” he wrote. “This approach weakens the whole system and discredits the work of the majority of councillors.”

He once again criticised the “serious lack of accountability of the monies received through the local warden and speed cameras systems”. He also criticised government for the unsatisfactory replies given in parliament over the issue and added the subject should be investigated.

Muscat said he was standing up to stop “this citizen-subsidised racket” and said that “no unspoken agreement" will stop him.

He said that money should be invested in communities and not wasted on bureaucracy.

While I totally agree with Dr. Joseph Muscat, people have to use their brains, in order to choose the right councillors so that all their locality would benefit. We have councils, especially in the south of Malta, where we have had almost the same faces since the intoduction of the local councils! Some are even so ambitious to stay on that the make a block vote in order to have things their ways! Besides maybe having a business or two, and they get elected to protect their interests! I'm sure Dr. Muscat knows all this, because the statement that he made didn't go well with some of these so called 'councillors'. They do their best towards their inner circle and they give a hoot about all others, even if 'the others' sympatise within the same party, or if what 'the others' need is according to the law, and by right! We've seen alot of stupid things happening, especially when there was a whole week of musical activities in May, by a popular band club, and certain elements within the local council tried to disrupt these activities for one reason or another! But Dr. Muscat gave them a cold shower because he turned up by surprise on one night during these charitable activities. I don't need to say more! I'm sure many understand to what I'm refering to! Dr.Muscat, please get us new faces along with your ideals!

Not only Local Councils should be accountable but All Gov Depts, parastatal organisations and the whole lot, including the Ministers. All forms of corruption should be stopped by one and all. It is a habit that no one is responsible for anything but put the blame on their subordinates. Who is responsible for Arriva for the chaotic state she is in? Who is responsible for the over expenditure on contarcts and Gov Dept etc? NO ONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
